Commonwealth Scholarships 2025-26 in the United Kingdom for Rwandan Students: Deadline30th sept 2025
Introduction
The Higher Education Council
(HEC) of Rwanda has officially announced that the Commonwealth
Scholarship Commission (CSC) in the United Kingdom has requested Rwanda to
nominate 16 candidates for PhD studies and 14 candidates for Master’s
studies under the prestigious 2026 Commonwealth Scholarships.
These scholarships will be tenable
from September/October 2026 at leading UK universities. They are part of
the UK’s long-standing commitment to supporting global education and
development by empowering talented students from Commonwealth countries.
It is important to note that nomination
by HEC does not guarantee final selection or placement, as the final
decision lies with the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC).

The Commonwealth Scholarship is one

Themes
Applicants are required to align
their studies with one of the six development themes of the Commonwealth
Scholarship. These themes ensure that the research and education supported
contribute directly to addressing global and national challenges.
- Science and Technology for Development – Promoting innovation and research to advance
socio-economic growth.
- Strengthening Health Systems and Capacity – Building strong healthcare systems for better public
health outcomes.
- Promoting Global Prosperity – Fostering entrepreneurship, economic growth, and
inclusive development.
- Strengthening Global Peace, Security, and Governance – Enhancing good governance, security, and conflict
resolution.
- Strengthening Resilience and Response to Crises – Preparing societies to respond to environmental,
economic, or humanitarian crises.
- Access, Inclusion, and Opportunity – Ensuring equal opportunities and breaking barriers
to education and development.
Eligibility
Criteria
Before applying, candidates should
carefully check the eligibility requirements:
- For Master’s Scholarships:
- Must hold a Bachelor’s degree with at least Second
Class Upper Division or equivalent in a related field.
- For PhD Scholarships:
- Must have attained at least 70% in previous
academic studies.
- General Requirements:
- Must be a Rwandan citizen with a valid National
ID or Passport.
- Should demonstrate academic excellence and leadership
potential.
- Must present a quality research proposal
clearly describing the development impact in Rwanda.
- Submission of a personal statement is highly
encouraged as it strengthens the application.

Interested candidates are required
to prepare and submit the following documents:
- Application letter
addressed to the Director General of HEC, clearly indicating:
- The chosen course of study
- Admission status (admitted or not)
- University name (if already admitted)
- Employer details and current position
- Any additional supporting information
- Valid National ID or Passport
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Employer Recommendation Letter
- Original-notified degree and transcripts for the previous level of education
- Academic Recommendation Letters from university staff who supervised or taught the
applicant

- Online submission via: http://mis.hec.gov.rw/system-login
- Only complete applications with all required documents
will be accepted.
- CSC Online Application System
- Separate application through the CSC portal: CSC

platform will not be considered.

Applicants are strongly advised not
to wait until the last minute and to submit early to avoid technical
issues.
